FIRE crews were called to Winchester Cathedral today after smoke was smelt inside the medieval church.

Six engines, including two areial appliances, were called in this afternoon to the church which was being evacuated.

Jerry Leonard, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service group manager, said: "We received a call from the cathedral stating that the automatic fire alarm had operated. The cathedral staff recognised a smell of burning.

"We are utilising thermal cameras, trying to locate the source of the smell of burning."

The building, which dates back to the 11th century, is largely made of stone but has a large amount of wood particularly in the roof.
