WINCHESTER Rotary has re-launched its monthly coffee mornings allowing dementia patients and carers to take a break from home struggles and chat with friends.

Mayor of Winchester Cllr Eileen Berry and Winchester Rotary president Gill Russell opened the first new Reminiscence Coffee Morning at Sunrise Senior Living Care Home, Stockbridge Road, on Thursday (September 11).

Tea and pastries were served while Rotarians led sing-alongs of classic songs, allowing dementia patients to reminisce and enjoy time away from home.

Patients and their carers – often family members – can use the mornings to relax, chat and share their burdens with friends and Rotarians.

Organiser Norman Murphy said: “I’m so delighted that it was a success this morning. Everyone that came enjoyed it.

“There’s a need in the city for a coffee morning like this. It’s as important for the carers to come out as the patients with the dementia, because they’re taking the burden on themselves.

“They can feel isolated at home.”

Winchester Rotary is re-launching the coffee mornings on the second Thursday of every month from 10.45am to avoid clashing with other community events.

Mr Murphy advised carers to confirm their attendance in advance to ensure there is provision for their needs. To book call Bluebird Care on 01962 856900.
