POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a serious crash on a Hampshire road yesterday, which injured four people including a two-year-old child.

Police were called to a road traffic incident on the A34 near Whitchurch at 3.42pm yesterday, after reports of a three-vehicle collision across both carriageways, including a caravan.

A silver Daewoo Musso 4x4 towing a caravan was travelling northbound towards Newbury when it lost control.

The car and caravan crossed the central reservation onto the southbound carriageway, separating and colliding with two cars travelling in the opposite direction.

A 76-year-old man and his 70-year-old wife, both from Southampton, travelling in a blue Vauxhall Astra, suffered serious injuries.

A 30-year-old woman from Bath suffered minor injuries and a two-year-old child sustained serious injuries – however these are not thought to be life-threatening. They were travelling in the Daewoo.

The child and women were taken to hospital by Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance, and the remaining casualties by land ambulance to two separate hospitals.

PC Andy Christopher, said: “We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have seen a light-coloured 4x4 towing a caravan travelling northbound towards Newbury on Wednesday prior to the collision to come forward, as you may have important information to help with our investigation.

“This was a serious incident and our thoughts are with those injured and their families at this time. I’d like to thank those caught up in the delays for their patience whilst we were on scene with our emergency service partners and carried out our crime scene investigation.”

The A34 remained closed for four hours for investigations and carriageway repairs.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Sgt Barry Long from the Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting Operation Loring.
