About 70-80 people have taken part in the two-day 60-mile ‘Long Haul’ aiming to raise £10,000 for their revamped hut in Weeke.

Dave Kesby, chairman of the executive committee of the 1st Winchester Scout Group, speaking to the Hampshire Chronicle less than a mile from the finish: “It has gone incredibly well, it’s been very trying, literally a Long Haul.

“It has been invigorating and inspiring; lots of people didn’t think it would happen. People didn’t think we could do it, but we have done it.”

The group borrowed a historic wooden cart which were commonly used 50-80 years ago to take scout gear to a campsite. This one is thought to be at least 60 years old and was borrowed from 25th Southampton Sea Scouts.

Two people pulled the cart at any one time. Going up and down hill takes about four people.

They started at 8am on Saturday at Sandbanks, Poole, and completed 36 miles on the first day staying the night at the Ferny Crofts scout centre in the New Forest.

The trekkers were met in The Broadway by the Mayor of Winchester Eileen Berry on Sunday evening.
