FORMER Winchester Canon Residentiary The Very Revd Alexander Wedderspoon has died aged 83.
He served at the cathedral for 17 years before becoming Dean of Guildford in 1987.
During his time at Winchester, Wedderspoon - the son of a Church of Scotland minister - proved himself an adept and foresighted Treasurer.
He was the driving force behind the opening of the pastoral and educational centres in The Close, and eventually became the chairman of the national Cathedrals’ Finance Conference.
Wedderspoon retired in 2001, and lived in Cranleigh until his death on June 10.
His funeral was held at Guildford Cathedral last week.
He is survived by his wife, Judith, daughter Caroline, and son Michael.
