CHILDREN of a Winchester primary school have raised over £2,500 for a charity which helps disadvantaged children abroad.

After a presentation from school governor and charity worker, Kevin Knight, staff and children of All Saints C of E Primary School decided they wanted to help raise money to assist charities AidCamps International and SERVE.

The two organisations have partnered to fund and build a ‘Home Away from Home’ centre at Modera, south of Colombo in Sri Lanka, which is staffed by two social workers and one teacher to support children in the poor community.

The St Catherine’s Road school held three events – a non-uniform day, copper coin collection, and a whole school-sponsored fun run held at Bar End Stadium.

The fun run alone raised £2,300, with a grand total raised of £2,576.31.

The money was presented to Mr Knight at the school’s Celebration Worship, who said it would fund two extra toilets and showers at the centre.

Headteacher Ms Osborne said: “The staff and I are so proud of our children. They, along with the fantastic support of their families and friends, have worked really hard to raise money for a less fortunate community across the world.

“As a Church of England School, we obviously hold Christian values dear and being charitable to others shows a real concern for those families who are in situations far worse than any of our children could imagine.”

Mr Knight is set to return to the school in September to show photographs of what their money helped build.
