UNSUNG heroes have been recognised by the Mayor of Winchester for their contributions to the local community.
The Mayor of Winchester’s Community Awards, at Winchester Guildhall, recognised 73 organisations or individuals who have given outstanding voluntary service.
In conjunction with Winchester Area Community Action (WACA) the awards also commend those who have given outstanding service in the course of their employment, going above and beyond the call of duty.
The awards fell into six categories: Young Volunteer Award (split category for under 18, and 18-30 year olds), Caring Award, Caring Award – Young Person (17 and younger), Service to the Community Award (individual), Service to the Community Award (Group/Organisation) and Innovation Award.
Among those recognised were community theatre group The Worthy Players, who are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, Winchester Special Constabulary team and Pat Lawrence who co-ordinated the flood relief effort in Cheriton during the recent poor weather.
