TEACHERS at Peter Symonds College are preparing to strike next week.

With 144 National Union of Teachers members, the largest in the area, the college will see teachers walk out on Wednesday March 26 as part of national action calling schools and sixth form colleges to “stand up for education.”

NUT members want to draw attention to the estimated £100 million in cuts that colleges have seen over the past three years.

Nigel Fox, NUT representative for the college on Owen’s Road, said: “Staff and students alike are affected by these cuts. The consequences include large classes, overstretched teachers and a narrowing curriculum as ‘unviable’ courses are axed.

“Funding for things like tutorial support and non-examined activities have been cut by 74%.

“As a country we should be investing in young people and teachers, not cutting post-16 education provision. On March 26 we will be standing up for education.”
