PLANNING chiefs have given permission for a site in Southgate Street to be converted into student flats.

Winchester City Councillors agreed with the planning officer’s recommendations for the development at 21 Southgate Street to go ahead which will see 14 new students flats built above the existing Penyards Estate Agents.

The office will remain according to the development plan.

Councillor Frank Pearson said: “My first thought was it sounds a bit crowded but then I considered my granddaughter where there are eight of them living in a much smaller house and they are happier than bugs in a rug so I no longer have any issue with that. I like the fact that the grounds are still available to them for use as well and I think it’s a good amenity but I hope not for parties!

“I rather like this application and I think students will be lucky to live there.”

Councillors voted unanimously in favour for the project to go ahead.
