UPDATED: Two dead in crash near Littleton
Updated 10:04am Tuesday 25th February 2014 in News
TWO people were killed in a car crash on the A34 near Littleton last night.
A 70-year-old man and a 69-year-old woman were travelling southbound on the A34 when their car careered off the road, at Three Maids Hill, just after 6.30pm, ending up on its roof.
One passenger was thrown from the vehicle, a red Ford Fusion, while the other had to be cut free from the wreckage.
Police confirmed this morning that the couple were from Fareham.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man, who sustained serious injuries, was taken to Southampton General Hospital, but died a short time later.
The road was closed until the early hours of this morning as officers carried out their investigations to establish what caused the car to come off the carriageway.
It is not believed that any other vehicle was involved.
The road closure, between the A303 at Upper Bullington and the A33 at Kings Worthy, caused traffic disruption for hundreds of motorists heading south, as drivers were diverted to the A303 north, to get onto the M3.
Police are still trying to identify the victims and trace next of kin.
Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact PC Matthew Clayton at Whitchurch Roads Policing Unit on 101 quoting Operation Agate.
