A WINCHESTER woman celebrated in style when she turned 100 years old on Monday (December 30).

Dorothy Horler, who lives at The Old Parsonage in Otterbourne, was surrounded by family and friends to celebrate her centenary with a glass of sparkling wine and a slice of birthday cake adorned with iced flowers.

Mrs Horler was just 14 when she met her would-be husband Alec in Sheffield where she was born. They married in 1940 and moved to London after the war before moving to Southampton after Alec was appointed an official receiver in bankruptcy. During this time they began to play golf and retired to Oliver's Battery to be nearer The Royal Winchester Golf Club.

Alec and Dorothy enjoyed 64 years together and, even after her husband's death, Dorothy continued to play golf well into her nineties.

Dorothy's daughter, Pam Green, said everyone had a wonderful time.

“My mother turned 100 and we also had a two-and-a-half month old in the room so we had the spectrum covered pretty well,” she said. “She survived all the excitement and enjoyed being surrounded by old neighbours, family and friends.”

Great-grandmother to two, grandmother to three and mum to Pamela and Jacqueline, Dorothy has always enjoyed flower arranging, sewing and gardening.
