THE closing date for requests for seats at the funeral in Winchester Cathedral of acclaimed composer Sir John Tavener is running out.

Applications must be in by 9am on Monday November 25, the cathedral said today.

Places should be reserved through Emma Law (emma.law@winchester-cathedral.org.uk; The Cathedral Office, 9 The Close, Winchester, SO23 9LS).

Sir John, one of the most successful British composers of his generation, died at home on Tuesday (November 12), aged 69.

Known for his religious works, he was twice nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize, and won a Grammy in 2002 for best classical contemporary composition.

He was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Winchester in 2007.

The funeral service will take place at Winchester Cathedral on Thursday, November 28, at 11am.
