IT will be a tribute this Saturday (NOV23) to a unique rock concert 50 years ago.

The Mike Parker Experience will play at The Lido to remember the gig given by the Rolling Stones at the venue on Worthy Lane, Hyde on December 20 1963.

The concert will celebrate the enduring legendary band and also raise money for the Lido Roof Fund.

The building is now home to the Winchester Lido Sports Association and is in need of cash input to pay for renovation.

The Stones concer promoter charged 7s 6d entry or about 37p in today’s money for the gif at the Lido Ballroom as it was then known.

Tony Collier, whose band The Strangers were the support act that night, told the Chronicle in 2010: “I remember that we were all in this very small dressing room all together and they [Rolling Stones] were really nice guys, no problems at all.

“I can still see Rex Pragnell now [the promoter] — a really smart guy — in his suit and waistcoat, and I think a cigar, pleased as punch that he had pulled off a great coup getting them.”

When the Stones appeared at the Lido they had already enjoyed a couple of chart hits, including a number 12 placing for I Wanna Be Your Man — a Lennon and McCartney cover.

Tickets for the Raise the Roof concert are £7.50 and doors open at 7.30pm. To reserve tickets visit winchesterlido@btinternet.com and payment can be made in person before Noon at the Lido.
