City Bridge in Winchester to close for repairs
ONE of the main routes into the heart of Winchester will be shut for up to six consecutive Sundays.
City Bridge over the Itchen, will be closed off between its junctions with Chesil Street and Eastgate Street.
Winchester City Council, who acted as agents on behalf of Hampshire County Council with regard to the planning application, said the permission to close the road has been given for up to 12 months.
But it is believed the closure will be in place on no more than six occasions, during “off-peak Sunday morning hours”.
The city council said “reasonable facilities will be provided to allow access to adjacent premises while the work is being carried out.”
The Grade I listed building is need of maintenance and repair work, but it remains unclear whether any specific structural damage has occurred recently, or how much the repairs will cost. It is also not known when the work will start.
No information was available, despite Chronicle requests, from Hampshire County Council.
