The Winchester farmers' market comes to town this Sunday
WINCHESTER is to celebrate the great Hampshire hog at the end of this month.
Hampshire Farmers' Market will have hog-themed competitions for children on Sunday, September 29, as well as the thrills of piglet racing.
Pork producers will present award-winning produce at a taster session to give the opportunity for visitors to vote for their favourite sausage.
The day will be the centrepiece of the Hampshire Markets' celebrations for the British Food Fortnight, which runs from September 21 to October 6, to promote seasonal home-grown foods and encourage shoppers to buy local.
Alex Handford , business manager of the Hampshire farmers markets, said: “Our producers provide really good value and visitors to our markets are often surprised by the great savings they find from the reduced ‘food miles’ and no middle man, passed onto them. Our regular producer offers on our website and on the day give our visitors a really cost-effective and vibrant shopping experience with a wider choice of interesting local products.
“The success of our markets is due to the enthusiasm and dedication of our many award-winning suppliers, as well as the growing interest in buying locally produced seasonal food.”
The largest farmers market in the county will be bursting with seasonal produce including freshly picked plums, blackberries, apples and new season game, as well as many other seasonal offerings.
