INDIAN costumes, fabrics and artefacts go on display this weekend (September 14) at a Winchester gallery.

Traditional Kathakali dance outfits will be open to the public from this Saturday until October 6 demonstrating the history behind the Kerala people, originally from south-west India, in a series of workshops throughout autumn.

Kathakali make-up specialist, Kalamandalam Barbara Vijayakumar, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer the people of Winchester the opportunity to discover the colourful world of Kathakali and the people of Kerala, south-west India through beautifully made Kathakali costumes and our performances of this traditional form of dance and drama”.

The exhibition is on display at the City Space gallery at the Winchester Discovery Centre and includes two free workshops, from 11am-12pm, in Kathakali drama and Bhartaha Natyama dance, followed by two solo performances presented by experts and a film show from 2pm to 3.15pm.
