VILLAGERS turned out in their hundreds for the annual Littleton and Harestock Show on Saturday.

The event in Winchester's northern suburbs retains its popularity offering the attractions of a village fete and the competitive edge of the horticultural tent.

The flower and craft-making skills of local residents looks alive and well with scores of entries and no fewer than 26 submissions in the fruit cake section.

The Barton Stacey Jubilee Trad Band offered their easy-listening jazz before the Hook Eagles Morris Dancers performed their timeless moves.

For the children there were Punch and Judy shows, an inflatable slide, mini-football, rock-climbing whilst in the main arena was a Zumba display, a dog gymkhana and also falcons, although not at the same time.

There were numerous other stalls including The Messy Church, Tarot cards, books, bric a brac and the popular crockery smashing.

The show ground was tweaked this year with the marquees being moved from the top towards the bottom of Littleton recreation ground to create more space. One villager has yet to be convinced. He said: “It seems a bit more of a slope and you don't know which way it's going. Good job I'm sober!”

Last Thursday the village pet show raised £572 for local charities, including the 1st Winchester Scout Group towards their new hut.
