ROWDY students beware.

Winchester City councillors will soon be pounding the streets in an effort to reduce conflicts between residents and students.

Between September 16 and 27, councillors and officers will be joined by representatives from the University of Winchester Student Union, as they visit student digs across Stanmore, Winnall and Weeke.

Piloted in 2011, the project aims to address to reduce the number of “student-related issues” the council and university have to deal with.

Cllr Jan Warwick, portfolio holder for neighbourhoods and environment, said: “The Neighbourhood Services team, along with other members of the Community Safety Partnership, are keen to make sure that those students living away from university accommodation for the first time quickly feel part of the community that they live in.

“At the same time we want them to know that we will be taking a robust approach to any anti-social behaviour reported especially if that behaviour impacts on neighbours.”

During the visits, members of the Community Safety Partnership (CSP) will distribute a Welcome to the Neighbourhood booklet, produced by the city council in conjunction with the universities of Winchester and Southampton, and their respective student unions. The pamphlet provides information for students such as their bin collection day, hints and tips for getting on with neighbours, and advice on council tax and parking.

At the end of September, the Neighbourhood Services Team will be out in force, knocking on the doors of houses where there have been complaints, or if there is noise coming from them, dishing out warnings.
