ONE person has been killed after a collision involving a HGV and a 4x4 near Winchester.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were all called to the A303 at Bullington Cross shortly before 9am today.

The driver of a Dodge Nitro 4x4 was cut free from the wreckage by firefighters but died at the scene. The HGV driver is described by police as uninjured but “very shocked.”

There were no other passengers in either vehicle.

The slip road of the A303 was closed in both directions for most of the day, but police reported just before 4pm that the closures were "about to be lifted".

The exit slip road of A34 northbound lane was also closed this morning as a result of late finishing overnight road works on the road near Kings Worthy.

The work was supposed to finish at 5am, but one lane is still closed on the link to the A33. It is expected to stay closed for most of today.
