Romsey School's new headteacher starts work today.

Colm McKavanagh who spent the first 18 years of his life in Northern Ireland and then moved to England to study at universities in Lancaster and London said: “My experiences of growing up during the troubles in Northern Ireland really influenced my choice of career and I believe strongly that all children should enjoy learning and be actively engaged so that they can experience success in an ever changing world and can take this into their adult life.”

Mr McKavanagh who is married with two teenage children has 26 years teaching experience behind him and he’s taken over Gareth Bell’s head teaching role at Romsey School.

He will work alongside executive head Jonothan de Sausmarez.

“I started at the age of 24 and I have worked in several secondary schools in Hampshire and Southampton, as well as an international school in Spain. I am delighted to have been appointed as the headteacher of The Romsey School,” said Mr McKavanagh.

For the last 10 years, Mr McKavanagh held two posts at Houndsdown School in Totton. He was deputy headteacher before becoming associate headteacher – a role where he was responsible for the day-to-day management of the school.
