KEITH Walker, Canon Emeritus of Winchester Cathedral, has died in hospital after a long illness, aged 80.

He was Canon Librarian at Winchester Cathedral for 15 years. During that time he became very well known and admired for his passion for introducing art into the cathedral, including Sound II by Antony Gormley which stands in the crypt.

He also introduced art into the environs of the cathedral, most notably the Barbara Hepworth statue in the Inner Close.

His Ministry included pastoral work, helping people with their problems so that they could do better in their lives.

Mr Walker was also a scholar and set up Lent Lectures to which he also occasionally contributed. He was also an excellent preacher always speaking without notes. He already knew what he wanted to say, but it was always delivered on the spot with a watch in front of him so that he spoke for no more than 10 minutes.

His funeral will be on Wednesday August 21 in the Cathedral at 2:30pm. All who would like to attend are welcome.

Donations for the ministry of the Cathedral should be sent to Richard Steel & Partners Ltd Alderman House, 12-14 City Road, Winchester, SO23 8SD.
