HAT Fair bosses are reviewing plans for indoor events next year after mixed success last week.

While thousands of visitors enjoyed free outdoor acts during the annual street festival, 'Hidden Hat Fair' was less popular according to Theatre Royal boss Mark Courtice.

He said: “Some of the shows sold very well and others did not sell at all well. We did very well with some of the targeted shows, particularly the children's events here at the theatre, and we certainly covered our costs.”

It was the first time Hat Fair rolled out a substantial indoor programme, which was held across the city at locations including the Jewry Street theatre and Bar 3One in The Square.

Mr Courtice said it would return next year but likely in a new form but he refused to disclose which shows sold poorly and details of ticket sales for the events.

He said: “I think we will continue to do it but probably a bit differently next year. I do not think it would be fair to the performers to reveal those details. We have tried something out for the first time and I feel we need to give it another go before we decide whether it's working or not.”

Mr Courtice added there were no firm plans for any changes but they would be developed over the next few months.

He said: “You have to give me a bit of time. We have just taken over Hat Fair earlier this year and we did as much as we possibly could this year. I'm sure we are going to be doing a lot more next year but we need time to think about it and come up with plans that will be exciting.

“We are happy with how Hat Fair went and we had a lot of very, very pleased visitors across the city who enjoyed lots of great shows. It was a blast.”
