A WINCHESTER seamstress is to be a judge on a new television competition.

May Martin, sewing tutor at Peter Symonds Adult and Higher Education Division, in Stoney Lane, Weeke, is one of two judges for BBC2's Great British Sewing Bee.

The show is trying to find Britain's best amateur sewing enthusiast, following eight candidates over four weeks.

May, who lives near Romsey has been a teacher for more than 40 years and has vast knowledge of embroidery, quilting, appliqué and customising.

She said: “I was delighted to be approached for this role and gladly took up the challenge. We filmed the eight contestants in October and it was amazing to see how they rose to each new assignment.

“I hope that viewers will enjoy the series as much we did. Who knows maybe sewing will soon be as big a hit as baking has become!”

The show begins later this year.
