WINCHESTER’S artists, designers and craftsmen can win the chance to design a portable performance space to be used for events and celebrations.

A £20,000 commission will be given to the creator of a distinctive stage design, which encompasses Winchester’s heritage and landscape and is easily transportable for use in towns and villages in the area.

Designers have until April 5 to register interest, and shortlisted entrants will submit plans to Winchester City Council before a winner is decided.

Cllr Patricia Stallard, the council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities, Culture and Sport, said: “This commission provides an opportunity to reinforce local pride in the district’s long tradition of public art as part of its historic street scenes, as well as its growing reputation as a creative centre.

“A tailor-made, portable event space for the Winchester district will reflect the many community celebrations which characterised the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in the summer of 2012 and act as a lasting reminder of that special year.”
