HOUSING bosses have approved a £4.4 million project that will see a care home redeveloped for new homes.

Victoria House, on Victoria Road, Hyde, will no longer provide sheltered housing for the elderly, but instead form part of the city’s new homes programme.

Winchester City Council had already earmarked the site for closure on the basis that ‘Extra Care’
tenants — elderly people living in self-contained homes with a legal right to occupy the property —
should be upgraded from studio accommodation to one-bedroom flats.

It was recommended that redevelopment go ahead as it will provide more new affordable homes,
and will be an opportunity to enhance the conservation area.

Initial plans show the site can accommodate 30 flats with underground parking, and the council said a development programme will be submitted later this month, with a formal planning application to follow later.
