Aspiring Winchester architects sought for new project
ASPIRING architects from Winchester are being sought to help design the future of their local environment.
LHC Architecture is recruiting students for its award-winning 12-month SPUD Youth programme where 14 to 21-year-olds work alongside designers on urban projects.
Last year’s students presented designs to improve Oxford Road and Ocean Village in Southampton and the M275 approach to Portsmouth.
The programme, which began in 2009, won the Public Sector Award at the 2013 National Urban Design Awards.
SPUD director and LHC principal associate Mark Drury said: “There’s a general misconception that all teenagers want from urban development are snow domes or skate parks but we’ve found that young people often have excellent ideas for improving our built environment.”
The next programme in Southampton will include input into development of Southampton’s new West Quay Watermark, looking at ways of activating the area and improving connections with the city centre and Mayflower Park.
A sister project in Winchester will focus on improvements to the area directly in front of Winchester Railway Station.
