Winchester campaigning group to discuss disbanding

THE future is uncertain for a long-running civic campaigning group in Winchester which meets on Thursday.

The Winchester City Residents’ Association is holding an annual general meeting and will discuss whether to carry on its work, or disband.

In the past the association has played a role opposing controversial road schemes such as the inner ring road proposal in the 1970s, scrutinising developments such as the Brooks Centre and Silver Hill and campaigning on issues such as traffic, health and the homeless.

Chairman John Thomas said: “We are in urgent need of recruiting new members. Membership is less than 100 which is worrying.

“It seems to be a general problem with associations. I shall be setting out the situation as I see it and asking for ideas,” said Mr Thomas, who replaced Alan Weeks after his death in 2010.

Among the current issues have been 2,000 homes at Barton Farm, Silver Hill redevelopment and the local plan.

The AGM will be at the Milner Hall in St Peter Street, starting at 7.30pm. It is open to all.
