A WINCHESTER watering hole has scooped a national award from London-based brewers, Fuller's.

The firm named the Wykeham Arms, in Kingsgate Street, as its Town and Local Pub of the Year.

The announcement was made at a ceremony at Fuller's Griffin Brewery in Chiswick by the company's chief executive, Michael Turner, who praised the efforts of Peter and Kate Miller, who manage the pub, and their staff.

Mr Turner said: "The Wykeham Arms is a real gem in the Fuller's estate.

"Peter and Kate have built a team that is second to none, and a pub that Fuller's is proud to own.

"The pub is a real delight and its guestrooms are all unique which highlights the managers' desire to make the pub really special."

Mr Turner presented the Millers with a plaque to mark their success, along with a £1,000 holiday voucher. They were also given £200 in cash to share amongst the staff.

It is not the first time that the Wykeham Arms, which dates back more than 250 years, has been praised by industry experts.

In 2003 it was named Les Routiers' Wine Pub of the Year for the south and south east of England.
