WINCHESTER civic chiefs are hosting their first-ever Dance Summit next week.

They have invited dance organisations, teachers and dancers to the United Church in Jewry Street on Thursday February 7.

The gathering will discuss current provision, with a focus on what happens when young people move from primary to secondary schools.

Thousands of local people dance each year, at commercially-run classes to fun, community groups.

Launching the summit will be a live performance by Winchester-based Integr8 Dance Company.

Charlie Sapey, director of Integr8 Dance Company, said: “We are looking forward to the event and are grateful to Winchester City Council for giving our dancers the opportunity to perform and talk about their own real life experiences.”

City councillor Patricia Stallard, portfolio Holder for communities, culture and sport, said: “This summit is the first in a series of arts sector meetings.  We have started with dance because it fits very neatly with our other 2012 Legacy work, and will capture the buzz from last year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Dance offers an activity for people who may not consider themselves as ‘sporty’.  The Council is keen to work with partners to ensure that all our residents have the opportunity to lead active and healthy lifestyles.”
