POLICE arrived at a field in Bishop’s Waltham to check the welfare of a herd of horses - only to find one already dead.

A second horse was severely lame and was immediately taken away for treatment on January 9.

Acting on a tip-off, officers had been working closely with the RSPCA and continued to monitor the animals.

On January 19 they arrived - with the RSPCA - at the site on Dundridge Lane to rescue the remaining 21 horses.

All of the horses were said to be in an “unhealthy state”.

PC Sarah Newman said: “It was extremely shocking to see these horses in such a poor state of health. We continued to monitor the herd and ensured the field was suitable for grazing and that they had enough water. The horses are now being cared for by the RSPCA and receiving treatment needed for their recovery.”

Anyone with any information should contact Bishop’s Waltham police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
