A GRAIN site within the South Downs National Park can be opened up for general purpose storage, despite protests from nearby residents.

Developers of the Grainstore on Thompsons Lane, Owslebury, were given the green light by planning officers, but on condition of a £10,810 levy towards the upkeep of surrounding roads, payable to the county council.

Four households objected to the proposals on the basis of increased noise and traffic, but civic chiefs gave the go ahead on the recommendation of planning and highways experts.

On January 9, councillors voted unanimously in favour of the proposals, asking agreeing to ask the county council that they consider using the £10,810 on measures to reduce the speed of traffic in the area.
