EMERGENCY services were called to Winchester Prison last night after a fire broke out in a prisoner’s cell.
Three fire engines and 12 fire fighters attended the scene.
A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, who were at the prsion for about an hour and a half, said: “We’re not fully aware of how it started yet, but we believe the inmate may have started it himself.”
An ambulance was also called to the incident at 10.30pm and one man was treated for light smoke inhalation, but was not taken to hospital.
It is understood the matter is not being pursued by police but will be dealt with internally by the prison service.
