A WINCHESTER restaurant has vowed to win the ‘Curry Oscars’ after falling short this year.

Balaka Indian restaurant in Weeke was up against two other Hampshire eateries at the British Curry Awards in November but were unsuccessful.

Shafi Hussein, owner, said: “We were disappointed not to win, but had a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable evening. We are already working on the judges’ feedback in preparation for next year’s event and will persevere until we are successful."

He added: "There are over 10,000 Indian restaurants in the UK, employing 80,000 people and turning over £3.5 billion annually, and so to be recognised amongst the best is a fantastic achievement both our staff and customers can be proud of."

The glitzy ceremony was attended by celebrities including royal correspondent Jenny Bond and PR guru Max Clifford.
