RESIDENTS of a homeless hostel in Winchester are stepping out for charity.

Fifteen men and women who live at West View House in Hyde want to donate toys and gifts to Winchester Basics Bank to give families in need this Christmas.

Residents, who suffer from drug, alcohol and mental health problems, came up with the idea of a sponsored walk to give something back to the organisation which provides them with essential food supplies and clothes several times a year.

Residents and staff plan to set-off from King Alfred's statue in The Broadway for a four-mile hike along the River Itchen on Thursday November 29.

Project worker Molly Edwards said: “Basics Bank is fantastic service and we are keen to raise awareness of homelessness and poverty in our local area and bring some joy into people's lives especially around the Christmas period.”

Organisers have asked for donations by December 4 to allow time for gifts to be bought and wrapped.
