CHARITIES and groups in the Winchester district are set to benefit from the city’s annual bonfire night fundraiser.

Winchester Round Table is looking to allocate funding from the £30,000 raised on November 3 to worthy causes in the area.

Round Table is now inviting groups and individuals to apply for grants of around £1,000 each.

Around £5,000 of the £30,000 raised will be set aside for the ‘Cash for Causes’ scheme — run in conjunction with the Hampshire Chronicle — set to start in January.

Ian Wilson, Round Table community service officer, said: “We’ve had a successful bonfire night and raised a significant amount and now we are looking for suitable causes to distribute the funds to.

“Last year we gave to a broad range of groups such as local charities, pre-schools and schools. But we are also open to grants to individuals. It is about helping people in the Winchester community.”

He added: “People should put how much they need and what they think they can do with the money, and we will judge each case on its own merits.”

He encouraged all applications to be sent in before Christmas so it does not overlap with Cash for Causes, a scheme where smaller grants of up to £500 each are distributed.
