A WINCHESTER pub has scooped a big prize in its brewery’s awards.

The Wykeham Arms, Kingsgate Street, won Best Hotel/Inn in Fuller’s Pub of the Year contest.

The results were announced at a ceremony at the company’s Griffin Brewery in London last Tuesday (Nov 6).

Presenting the awards to pub manager Jon Howard, Fuller’s chairman Michael Turner said: “The Wykeham Arms is one of the most famous pubs in the country and I’m delighted to be handing Jon this very well-deserved award. The judging process for the Griffin Trophy involved an overnight stay and our visit to The Wykeham was perfect.

“Jon’s pub is popular with everyone, from local residents to teachers from the nearby college to visiting parents. The pub just radiates warmth and you can understand why it has won so many other awards this year, such as the best town pub in the Good Pub Guide 2013.”

Mr Howard added: “We’ve had a great year here at The Wykeham and this award really puts the icing on the cake. I’d like to thank all our customers for supporting us this year and we look forward to celebrating this win with them.”

The prize was a £2,000 holiday, a plaque for the pub and a party for the staff.
