THE new library on a Winchester estate will officially open on January 21 2013.

The Stanmore Community Library at The Carroll Centre on Somers Close replaces the county council-run library on Wavell Way that fell victim to cuts this year.

Council leader Ken Thornber will officially open the library at 10.30am, before pupils from Stanmore
Primary School become the first to use the new facility.

Head of centre Jool Heller-Dixon said: "We are all looking forward to the beginning of a new chapter, to celebrate the 20th year of The Carroll Centre.”

It's good still to have a library. But now the residents are made further beholden to this church. The church originally took up valuable space on the council playing field and now they are recipients of a failed and negligent council library policy. It seems as if the middle class council are giving up the ghost in the area and the smiling, elitist, liberal church is the recipient of available funding, resources and land - what's next: reintroducing a medieval system of paying the church tithes and forced church attendance.
