Hampshire swimmers face lake challenge
AN UPHAM couple are preparing to swim the length of the largest natural lake in England to raise money for charity.
Matt Amesbury, 29, and his partner Jenny Cox, 30, of Widlers Lane, Upham, are swimming the length of Lake Windermere in Cumbria on Sunday August 17 to raise money for Cancer Research.
So far they have raised around £1,700.
Mr Amesbury is a research scientist at Southampton University and Miss Cox is a primary school teacher.
The couple have been training at the Southampton University swimming pool on the Highfield campus.
Mr Amesbury said: "We really wanted to do something to raise money for cancer research as we had a friend from university who died from cancer and we have both had grandparents who have died from cancer. We just wanted to do something pretty big to try to raise a lot of money.
"We are hoping to raise £5,000. We haven't done anything as big as this before. We are both into exercise and have done 10K and half marathons, but nothing like this.
"We are hoping the swim will take about six hours. We have been doing lots of swimming, which is starting to get a bit boring! We started training for this last year and are up to doing three-hour swims at the Jubilee pool at Southampton University.
"We probably will get a bit bored during the swim, but it is much better swimming in the open water because there is more to look at and we will have several boats with us for support.
"The best thing to do when you are swimming for a long time it to take it half an hour at a time and then the time seems to go a bit quicker."
