Youngsters learn to build bridges
CHILDREN at a Winchester primary school became engineers for a day, as part of a workshop in conjunction with Roke Manor Research Limited.
The pupils at Western Primary School in Fulflood had the chance to design and build model bridges during the day, which was run by Janice Hendry, a graduate engineer from the Romsey-based company.
She ran a brainstorming session to give the children an idea of what engineering is like and then divided the class of 10 and 11-year-olds into teams.
Armed with straws, split pins, scissors, a ruler and a hole punch, the teams were tasked with building a bridge that spanned a gap of 40cm and could hold at least one rubber ball.
The winning structure managed to hold nine balls, and a special best looking bridge' award was also presented to an all girl team for their intricate lattice design.
Lucy Thomas, leading the activity, said: "The children learnt a lot about the different roles within engineering and the value that good teamwork plays in delivering successful projects."
The workshop took place during a design and technology week last month (July), which was held to give the children a taste of the engineering sector.
