Aldi more welcome in current climate?
SIR - Could it be that the delay in starting the Waitrose store in Weeke (Chronicle, July 10) is because they have been hit by the credit crunch and are shelving the project, like so many builders are doing at present?
Perhaps if they're short of cash they could sell the site to Aldi, and help everyone who is struggling at the moment!
Not everyone in Winchester is as unaffected by the present state of the economy as certain estate agents suggest in your paper, and Winchester is a dreadful place to be poor in.

It would raise a real predicament for the council if Waitrose did sell the land to Aldi. What possible excuses could they then invent just to ensure that Aldi doesn't get into Winchester? I'm sure that they would find something.
