A GANG of robbers made off with a case full of cash after attacking a security van officer in a Hampshire village.

The robbers struck outside the Tesco Express store in Winchester Road, Fair Oak - pulling up in a stolen car and targeting the Securicor employee who was about to top up the store's cash machine.

The drama unfolded in front of a crowd of shocked onlookers who were using the Esso petrol filling station outside the Tesco shop.

Police said the gang, believed to be of three men, pulled up in a black Vauxhall Astra. After one of the gang attacked one of the Securicor workers and stole the case of money, they sped off in the stolen car.

The car was later found dumped in nearby Sandy Lane. It is thought the group then made off in a Peugeot 306.

Police are now examining CCTV taken from cameras that overlook the filling station forecourt.

advertisement Alex Turner, a customer assistant at the Tesco store, was at work at the time of the robbery. He said: "I was just about to go home when the three bells that indicate an emergency went off.

"I was out the back so ran through the shop, thinking there had been a robbery.

Straight away I saw the Securicor guy lying on the floor with lots of people around him.

"Nothing like this has ever happened here before. It was a real shock - you don't expect it here."

No weapon was reported to have been used and the Securicor employee is understood not to have suffered any injuries during the incident at 6pm on Friday Alex said: "He came into the store today and said thanks to us for helping. He is fine and is going back to work tomorrow."

Tesco Express duty manager Steve Cuzner added: "As far as I know, one person jumped out of the stolen Astra and ran towards the Securicor van then attacked the man. The whole thing was over in about ten seconds."

It is not currently known how much cash was inside the stolen case.
