SPECIAL prayers for Diana, the Princess of Wales, were said at Winchester Cathedral on Sunday, as more than 250 people attended an evensong service to mark the 10th anniversary of her death.

The service, held in the Cathedral nave, was open to all, with the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire and a number of civic heads of Hampshire among those attending.

The prayers included those by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Dr Rowan Williams, written at the request of Princes William and Harry.

The Very Reverend James Atwell, the Dean of Winchester, led the service at Winchester Cathedral. He said: "It was good to welcome so many people who came to honour the life of Diana. It was a gentle, reflective and positive atmosphere.

"Ten years ago, people were stood in the aisles of churches including this Cathedral, expressing their grief and emotions. There now appears to be a more restful and contemplative response, a chance to focus on her work and the Christian virtue of vulnerability, which we can learn from Diana's life. We continue to focus our thoughts and prayers on her sons, Princes William and Harry."

Nigel Atkinson, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire said "I was delighted to represent the Lord-Lieutenant at the service and to join with others in remembering the life of Diana, Princess of Wales"

The Cathedral's Precentor and Sacrist, the Revd Canon Michael St John-Channell, said: "It was a peaceful service and the choir, visiting from Kent, sang beautifully and summed up the mood of those who had come to pay tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales. It was good to see people coming together from different churches and backgrounds to express their feelings in this way."
