THE University of Winchester's Vice-Chancellor joined dignitaries from Winchester city and Hampshire county councils to put ceremonial spades into the ground to mark the start of construction of its new athletics track.
Prof Joy Carter, the Mayor, Cllr Chris Pines and the leader of Winchester City Council, Cllr George Beckett, all helped mark the occasion.
When the project is completed, it will boast an Olympic standard 400m eight-lane track, all-weather hockey and sports pitch, floodlighting and extended pavilion for the use of both students and the wider community.
Funding has come from a £900,000 Sport England grant, £1m each from the university and Winchester City Council, £210,000 from Hampshire County Council, and £22,000 from Winchester District Athletics Club.
The new facilities are expected to be finished in early 2008, with the pavilion extension later that year.
