SIR — I wondered if you would be interested in my two positive experiences of the RHCH?

Our 13-year-old son was admitted to Northbrook ward in March, following a nasty rugby injury to his finger.

He required two operations under general anaesthetic to correct this complicated fracture.

We were overwhelmed by the attitude and attention of every member of the A&E, theatre, X-ray and Northbrook ward teams we had contact with.

The time given to him in explanation and care was quite remarkable and made all the difference.

In July I was admitted to Shawford ward at the RHCH. It was my first admission to hospital as an unwell patient, and the 15 nights of my admission gave me ample opportunity to experience the good work of the ward sister, Donna Coombes and her team.

As a previous registered nurse/midwife at Winchester, until 12 years ago, it felt strange being the on the ‘other side of the fence’, but it was great to see how things have moved on in such a positive way. Given the sometimes negative publicity the NHS receives, I feel very fortunate that we have access to such great care in Winchester.

I was particularly impressed with the clinical expertise, professionalism and sensitivity of the team and the high standards of cleanliness. The terrific team spirit was also palpable.

Despite being so unwell, I felt extremely safe in their hands and have made a full recovery.
