SIR — Regarding your article re the closure of the lay-by near Sutton Scotney, thereby excluding a popular kebab van, I would like to make the following observations.

I would dispute that the van is now trading at a lay-by at Christmas Hill. This is in fact the entrance to a restricted byway where traffic access (including kebab vans) is illegal.

It is now difficult and dangerous for the many horse riders who use this byway to get their horses safely past the van and its clients, and is an accident waiting to happen.

Vehicles that wish to access the van, at its current site, now enter and exit at the top of a hill with two nearby junctions and restricted visibility, adding to traffic hazards.

Litter from kebab clients now bedecks Christmas Hill, Downs Road and Lower Road, causing a nuisance to residents.

At the van’s previous site, near Sutton Scotney, there are no residents within three quarters of a mile.

Access is on a straight road with perfect visibility, so this hardworking businessman disturbed nobody and caused no hazard.

Before being blocked off, the lay-by probably had room for six lorries at the most. Who exactly were they disturbing?

I would ask that sense prevails and that Mr Kaygusuz be allowed to return to his previous pitch where he can run a successful business without parking on an illegal site, causing a traffic hazard and inconveniencing local residents.
