Quiz show host Nicholas Parsons has admitted that he is still worried about ending up on the professional scrapheap at the age of 92.
The presenter has hosted BBC Radio 4 comedy panel game Just A Minute since it was first broadcast in 1967.
But he told the Radio Times he was always aware that each job could be his last.
He said: “You’re only as good as your last job. If I once slip up in anything I do, and they don’t want you again, or the public don’t come and attend, you are gone.
“You’re on the professional scrapheap. They would find somebody else.”
Nicholas went on: “I’m being a bit sardonic, but the bottom line is it’s a tough business. Every time I go out to do Just A Minute, I am conscious I might never work again.”
The star said chairing the show took a lot of mental agility and he would not be able to do it if his mind was not in good working order.
“My brain is probably younger than my years, though my legs aren’t,” he said.
This week’s Radio Times is on sale on Tuesday.
