Shaping Up - the final entry
Posted by Steven Smith at 10:31am on Tue 25 Sep 07

Ok stat fans, this is it. Six weeks ago I listed all the need-to-know facts and figures of what sort of shape I was in.
It wasn’t too bad at that point, but what we’re hoping for here is some improvement after about 25 sessions at the revive gym.
Before we get to the nitty-gritty, I will say that all in all I’m fairly pleased. Whatever the computerised stats might tell us, I feel generally a bit fitter, slightly less porky and I definitely have better defined muscles.
Several family and friends have also remarked upon a visual change, which is nice.
So, without further ado, here we go.
Body fat hasn’t changed much, down to 17 per cent from 17.2 per cent. That might not seem a lot, but it’s within the healthy level and it has gone down – and apparently the machine that measures it is not the most reliable anyway.
On to better news, my blood pressure has dropped from 149/91 at the start (high) to 127/79 after six weeks (normal).
As we all know, blood pressure readings vary from minute to minute, but it’s much nicer to see a green bar on a graph than a red one.
The most encouraging stat is probably my resting heart rate. When I started at the gym it was 74bpm; on my six-week assessment it had dropped to 59bpm. Very nice – this now means I fall in the “good” category rather than the “average” category.
I’m assured that this is a good indication of a general improvement in fitness.
My grip strength has marginally improved, but is still below average. A bit disappointing given the fact I’ve done quite a lot of weights, but I’ve realised that as long as I can hold a pint glass without dropping it I don’t really care how wonderful my grip is.
All my lung-related readings have improved also, which is encouraging for someone who suffers from mild asthma.
Overall, then, pretty good. Some areas have improved more dramatically than others, but the important thing is that they have all got better.
After all, I’m only six weeks in, so really I’m just getting started. And, yes, I will be carrying on.

The time has come – I have a new regime.
Having mastered my initial programme after four weeks, personal trainer, Nick Jones, has decided to up the ante.
The focus has shifted a little in favour of the resistance exercises.
I’m now warming up on the rowing machine – 2km as quick as possible – then its onto the exercises.
First up is the dreaded plank, as before, but now on one of the exercise balls.
It’s actually not quite as hard as just doing it on the floor, but I am supposed to be holding it for longer and staying balanced on the ball isn’t so easy either.
After that it’s on to the weights. We start with bench chest flies (I think that’s what they’re called), with 6kg in each hand, 12 reps, followed immediately by press-ups on the floor.
Repeat three times.
Then it’s bench shoulder presses, 5kg in each hand, 12 reps, quickly followed by a side raise with 2kg on each side, 15 reps.
Repeat three times.
Next it’s the lunges. These burn after a while. I have to take 6kg in each hand and lunge forward, hold it for five seconds and rest. Five times each leg, three times over.
Then we’re onto one of the weight machines. Three lots of 12 reps on the 20kg setting, remembering to sit up straight.
Finally, a weighted crunch, back on the ball. This is basically little stomach crunches while holding a 5kg weight on my chest. Maybe this will help see off the dreaded beer belly.
After all that muscle-working exercise, we polish off with five or 10 minutes of the cardiovascular exercise of my choice – I reckon treadmill, it seems like harder work than the crosstrainer, after all.

I do enjoy going at the weekend, when I've got more time to enjoy the full experience.
Going after work I can only fit in the gym and nothing else, but on a Saturday or Sunday I get to have a post-workout dip in the pool and to relax in the hot-tub. Very nice indeed.
I'm due my four-week review now and I think I've done getting on for 20 sessions since I started, so, next time I bump into Nick I'm sure we can sort that and I'll have some updated stats to compare.

First day back after four days away and not quite as tough as I expected.
I wasn’t sure if it would be a bit of a killer going back after a bit of a break, but I generally managed all right.
It was quite busy so I had to mix up my routine a bit – Monday night must be popular with those who think they need to burn off the weekend’s excesses.
The hardest bit on this particular occasion was the weights; they really did burn towards the end.
Anyway, the friend I visited at the weekend was fairly impressed with the increase in muscles, so I will aim for at least four sessions this week and hopefully one at the weekend.
It's nice to know that my efforts are being appreciated!

Last night was the final session before a four-day break, which will be my longest since I started.
But I have done four days in a row, so I reckon I deserve a bit of a hiatus. How it will go when I return, however, could prove interesting.
As I’m away for the weekend there could be a fair bit of beer and fast food to burn off…

It’s definitely harder work when I’ve been in the office all day, I’ve decided. In one respect going to the gym is quite a good way to let off a bit of steam after work, but on the other hand it does require a little more effort on my part.
But, as I’m away this Friday to Sunday, I’m determined to squeeze in plenty of sessions before I go.
One slightly annoying thing about going after work, however, is trying to avoid Neighbours on the TVs. As I can’t hear the sound, I don’t want to spoil it for when I get home and watch the recording, therefore the focus needs to be on News 24, or some shockingly bad chat show on ITV…
