THEY recorded some of pop’s greatest love songs.

Eastleigh’s Concorde Club will be celebrating the life and music of Karen Carpenter and The Carpenters on Saturday.

The spectacular show, named after one of the American group’s biggest hits, We’ve Only Just Begun, is headlined by Toni Lee who has become the voice of Karen Carpenter.

Close your eyes and it’s easy to imagine that you are listening to one of the most iconic voices in pop history.

Toni mesmerised audiences on ITV’s Stars In Their Eyes with her spectacular tribute to the pop idol.

The blockbusting concert theatre production is part of a UK tour and is another coup for the Stoneham Lane Club which is building a big reputation for attracting top draw entertainment acts.

The two hour long concert is a celebration of the Carpenters music and the spirit of Karen Carpenter.

Accompanied by a big band and audio visuals, Toni will showcase those timeless Carpenters’ hits including Yesterday Once More, Superstar, We’ve Only Just Begun, Please Mr Postman, Close To You, I Won’t Last A Day Without You, Rainy Days and Mondays, Top of The World, Ticket To Ride and We’ve Only Just Begun.

Karen Carpenter was the voice of the multi-hit making group The Carpenters who along with her brother Richard, scored a string of worldwide chart toppers.

She had such a unique voice that it has proven almost impossible to duplicate its deep smoky emotional edge, creating that uniqueness which is so hard to perfect.

Now for the very first time in over 30 years the voice that melted a thousand romantic hearts lives again through Toni Lee in this 2-hour touring concert show.

A drummer and singer, Karen formed the duo, The Carpenters, in 1970 with her brother Richard.

They were the biggest selling group of the seventies. No fewer than 10 of their singles went on to become million sellers.

And they scored an unprecedented 17 consecutive Billboard US top ten hits. By 2005 combined worldwide sales of albums and singles exceeded more than 100 million.

Karen Carpenter’s life was one of the most fascinating but ultimately tragic stories in popular music history.

She died at the age of 32 in 1983 after battling against anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder which was little known at the time.

But through Toni Lee the amazing voice of Karen Carpenter lives on.
