POLICE have urged music lovers to be alert but not alarmed as they head to St Mary’s Stadium to see Robbie Williams perform tonight.

Up to 35,000 fans will descend on Southampton as the pop superstar’s Heavy Entertainment European stadium makes its second stop in the city.

It comes just weeks after 22 people were killed during a terrorist attack on an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

And gig goers should expect increased security around the stadium following the attack, and recent atrocities in London.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary told the Daily Echo: “We have reviewed, and will continue to review, our security plans and capability.

“It is normal procedure for us to work with event organisers in the run up to all large scale events to ensure they can run these safely and securely.

“People should not be surprised to see a heightened police presence at any event.

“We urge the public to be alert but not alarmed - the police service and our partners are doing everything we can to help protect the security of our citizens, public institutions, critical national infrastructure, and businesses and places.

“In addition, we advise the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behaviour or activity to police.”

Jordan Sibley, Head of Media at hosts Southampton Football Club, added: “Please be reassured that security for all events at St Mary’s Stadium is planned and measured with police and intelligence agency support.

“There will be additional security checks taking place ahead of the Robbie Williams concert, so we advise people to arrive as early as possible to allow time for these checks to take place. To minimise delays, fans are strongly advised not to bring any bag larger than a handbag to the event as large bags may not be allowed into the stadium.”

The former Take That singer and Brit award winner is set to showcase songs from his 11th studio album The Heavy Entertainment Show, as well as dazzling fans with an array of hits from across his three decades-long career, which saw him become the UK’s best-selling British solo artist.

Favourites from his latest album, which has already produced the hits Party Like A Russian and Love My Life, are expected to feature. But fans will also be hoping to enjoy some of his back catalogue of international hits including Angels, Kids, Let Me Entertain You, Millennium and She’s The One.

Robbie is also hotly tipped to perform his cover of Freedom as a tribute to late music icon George Michael.

Support comes from by 80s synth supremos Erasure, who have a new album out called World Be Gone and will include classics like Sometimes, A Little Respect and Oh L’Amour in their set.

Doors open at 5pm with Erasure taking to the stage at 7pm. The concert is due to end at 10.30pm.

Road closures around St Mary’s will be in place in the run up to and following the concert. Full for details of the closures click here.
