EIGHTIES throwbacks, rejoice.

The Wedding Singer is a full-on, unashamed celebration of the decade which fashion forgot.

Expect huge hair, grotesque greed and plenty of shoulder pads, as well as a never ending succession of celebrities from the era. Think Mr T, Cyndi Lauper and Tina Turner among others.

It tells the story of Robbie Hart – the singer that makes other people’s big days, despite being jilted at the altar and remaining unlucky in love himself.

The musical is based on the 1998 Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore movie that was enjoyable without ever reaching the cult status of some of its contemporaries. The stage version is also entertaining without hitting the heights of other musicals.

But the thin as a wedding veil story is delivered by a talented cast armed with exceptional singing voices, a score of hummable songs, a brilliant band and the odd good one-liner.

West End star Jon Robyns takes centre stage as Robbie and is pretty much ever present throughout, impressing with his versatility. The villain of the piece is one time X Factor runner-up Ray Quinn who takes the lead in a singalong homage to the dollar All About The Green, which proves one of the show’s highlights.

Cassie Compton sings beautifully as our heroine Julia while Roxanne Pallett plays her trashy but kind-hearted friend with aplomb. Don’t miss Ruth Madoc’s comedy turn as Robbie’s grandmother.

You’ll need to be a sucker for nostalgia to fall for this sickly sweet musical.

The Wedding Singer runs until Saturday. Tickets: 023 8071 1811 or mayflower.org.uk
